The 7th Planet from the Sun

Interesting facts about the composition and minerals of the planet.

Methane Ice on Uranus

Methane ice is a solid clathrate compound in which a large amount of methane is trapped within a crystal structure of water, forming a solid similar to ice. Methane ice is flammable because the methane gas inside the ice is extremely combustive. When the ice is lit and melts, methane gas emerges and can burn easily.

Uranus

Uranus is made of water, methane, and ammonia fluids above a small rocky center. Its atmosphere is made of hydrogen and helium like Jupiter and Saturn, but it also has methane. The methane makes Uranus blue. Uranus also has faint rings. The inner rings are narrow and dark. The outer rings are brightly colored and easier to see. Like Venus, Uranus rotates in the opposite direction as most other planets. And unlike any other planet, Uranus rotates on its side. Gravity on Uranus is only about 90 percent that of Earth. Uranus' outermost ring shines a bright blue and waves in the ring hint that the planet may have more than the 27 known moons.
